Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (FACCE)
NEW: The Governing Board of FACCE-JPI has approved the Implementation Plan 2018-2020, which proposes a set of 13 new and continued actions. It has been published in November.
The Joint Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (FACCE-JPI) brings together 24 countries who are committed to build an integrated European Research Area addressing the interconnected challenges of sustainable agriculture, food security and impacts of climate change.
FACCE-JPI provides and steers research to support sustainable agricultural production and economic growth, to contribute to an European bio-based economy, while maintaining and restoring ecosystem services under current and future climate change. It aims to do so with a strong trans disciplinary research base, encompassing economic and social aspects in addition to scientific ones, and with a creative approach towards the alignment of national programmes and the input of multiple actors and stakeholders.
Core research themes:
- Sustainable food security under climate change, based on an integrated food systems perspective: modelling, benchmarking and policy research perspective
- Environmentally sustainable growth and intensification of agricultural systems under current and future climate and resource availability
- Assessing and reducing trade-offs between food production, biodiversity and ecosystem services
- Adaptation to climate change throughout the whole food chain, including market repercussions
- Greenhouse gas mitigation: nitrous oxide and methane mitigation in the agriculture and forestry sector, carbon sequestration, fossil fuel substitution and mitigating GHG emissions induced by indirect land use change

Activities and actions
- Knowledge Hub FACCE MACSUR (Modelling European Agriculture with Climate Change for Food Security) (MACSUR 1: 2012 - 2014, MACSUR 2: 2014 - 2017)
MACSUR has gathered the excellence of research (more than 300 experts from 70 institutes) in modelling livestock, grasslands, farms, crops, and agricultural trade to describe how climate variability and change will affect regional farming systems and food production in Europe. - Knowledge Network on Sustainable Intensification (KNSI) (2016 - 2019)
This instrument is envisioned as a broad expert community connected by a Committee of National Science Leads and Funder Representatives and an informal web of nodes and interactions. The network is formed by ongoing projects, programmes and various national and international science-policy-practice interactions - Thematic Annual Programming (TAP) Soil (2016 - 2020)
The proposed scope for the network has emerged from ‘Improving Agricultural Soil Quality’ to 'Soil functionality under climate change with a focus on carbon (C) sequestration.' - ERA-NET Cofund SusCrop (Sustainable Crop Production) (2018 - 2022)
Aim: to strengthen the European Research Area (ERA) in the field of Sustainable Crop Production through enhanced cooperation and coordination of different national and regional research programmes - ERA-NET Cofund SusCrop cofunded call (2018) This call aims to improve the sustainability and resilience of crop production within the European Research Area (ERA) by supporting transnational research projects on this topic
- ERA-NET Cofund FACCE ERA-GAS (for monitoring & mitigation of Greenhouse gases from agriculture and forestry (2016 - 2021)
Aim: strengthen the transnational coordination of research programmes and provide added value to research and innovation on greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation in the European Research Area
- FACCE ERA-GAS cofunded call on monitoring & mitigation of Greenhouse
gases from agri- and silvi-culture (2016) This call aims to strengthen the
transnational coordination of research programmes and provide added value to
research and innovation on greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation in the European
Research Area and in New Zealand.
- Joint Call ERA-NET Cofund FACCE ERA-GAS, ERA-NET Cofund SusAn, and
ERA-NET ICT-AGRI 2 (2018) This call aims to contribute to the develop-
ment of novel technologies, solutions and systems to reduce the GHG
intensity of animal production systems (excluding aquaculture or fur animals) in
Europe and beyond. - ERA-NET Cofund WaterWorks2015 (with Water JPI) (2016 - 2020)
This ERA-NET Cofund set up a programme on sustainable water use in agriculture to increase water use efficiency and reduce soil and water pollution. This theme is common to the Strategic Research Agendas of the two collaborating JPIs.
- WaterWorks2015 cofunded call on Sustainable management of water
resources in agriculture, forestry and freshwater aquaculture sectors (2016)
This call covered the following challenges: (1) Increasing the efficiency and
resilience of water uses; (2) Monitoring and reducing soil and water pollution,
and (3) Integrating social and economic dimensions into the sustainable
management and governance of water resources. - ERA-NET Cofund FACCE SURPLUS (Sustainable and Resilient agriculture for food and non-food systems) (2015 - 2020)
Aim: improve collaboration across the European Research Area in the range of diverse, but integrated, food and non-food biomass production and transformation systems, including biorefining.
- FACCE SURPLUS first (cofunded) call on Sustainable and Resilient
agriculture for food and non-food systems (2015) This call focuses
on improving collaboration and cooperation across the European
Research Area in the areas of diverse, but integrated, food and
non-food biomass production and transformation systems, including
biorefining.
- FACCE SURPLUS second call on Small scale biorefineries (2017)
This call focuses in particular on small-scale multi-input, multi-
product biorefinery concepts and their potential role in enhancing
the sustainability and productivity of European agriculture, and
benefiting the rural economy. - ERA-NET Plus action on Climate Smart Agriculture (Climate Smart Agriculture: Adaptation of agricultural systems in Europe) (2013 - 2018)
Aim: address adaptation of European agriculture to climate change in its broad sense
- FACCE ERA-NET Plus cofunded call on Climate Smart Agriculture: (2013)
This call aims to promote pan-European research on Climate Smart
Agriculture. Topics: genetics and breeding of animals and plants to
increase resilience to climate change; pests and diseases linked to
climate and posing significant risks; adaptive management of water
and soil resources; and options for adapting agricultural systems. - Joint 'multi-partner call on agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) research' (2013)
This call was initiated by FACCE–JPI with the American National Institute of Food and Agriculture of the USDA, New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries and Agriculture, and Agri-Food Canada, to bring together excellent research consortia to enhance international collaboration in the face of the global issue of climate change mitigation. - Joint Call with Belmont Forum on Food Security and Land Use Change (2013)
