ERA-NET Cofund proposal on Sustainable Animal Production Systems – SusAn selected for funding

The European Research Area Network (ERA-NET) Cofund “European Research Area on Sustainable Animal Production Systems - SusAn” elaborates on the recommendation by the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) Collaborative Working Group on Sustainable Animal Production (CWG-SAP) of building the future development of European animal production on the three pillars of sustainability: economy, environment and society.

SusAn aims to fund research on innovative solutions for animal production systems to provide Europe’s citizens with sufficient, healthy and safe food, to safeguard natural resources, particularly land and water, to reduce fossil energy dependency and environmental impacts, and to take related societal concerns into consideration, whilst at the same time increasing food security. SusAn is likely to address several societal challenges and associated themes under Horizon 2020, for example sustainable agriculture, environment, resource efficiency and Europe in a changing world.

The SusAn consortium consists of 37 partners from 23 European Member States countries and Associated countries. The ERA-NET Cofund pools significant national resources with a total budget of more than €13.5 million, including the EU funding top-up.

The partners will invest in one co-funded call; additional research calls without EU co-funding are also envisaged. Other joint activities will include the development of a CSRIA and extension of collaboration with other European and international research and innovation initiatives on similar and cross-cutting issues. SusAn will make a special effort to engage multiple stakeholders like researchers, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), farmers, extension services, national and regional public authorities and consumers.

A consortium meeting was held on 1 and 2 December in Bonn to finalise the scope of the call and the concept call documents on which the EC will need to give approval, before real launch, foreseen in the first week of January 2016.

To maximise synergies, complementarities and impact, coordination and collaboration will be sought with FACCE-JPI and FACCE related ERA-NETs ERA-GAS and FACCE SURPLUS, JPI Water, JPI AMR (Antimicrobial resistance) and JPI HDHL (A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life).
